Banana leaves are beautiful, versatile and easy to use. They serve many purposes in Asian, Caribbean and Hispanic cuisine: cooking with banana leaves helps increase the mineral content in foods such as hallacas, tamales, rice, fish, chicken and others. Banana leaves are edible but are usually not eaten and used as a wrapping for cooking instead. Food wrapped in banana leaves can be grilled, steamed, deep-fried, etc.
Banana leaves are also very suitable for serving food: as bowls for salads, rice, fish or dishes that contain a little amount of liquid or cut up and laid out on a platter or serving dish.
