Angefangen hat alles 1867 mit dem schweizer Apotheker Henri Nestlé, welcher ein lösliches Milchpulver herstellte. Es wurde als Muttermilchersatz für Säuglinge angeboten.
Als Logo verwendete er sein Familienwappen und sein Familienname bedeutet im schwäbischen kleines Nest. Deshalb stellt das Firmenlogo die Brutpflege da.
1875 zog sich der Gründer aus dem Unternehmen zurück, doch damals wurden schon über eine Millonen Dosen pro Jahr produziert und 18 Ländern auf fünf Kontinenten verkauft.
