Tilapia is one of the most popular edible fish in Brazil. Its mild, white flesh goes well with many Brazilian dishes. Tilapia fillets are inexpensive and widely available in supermarkets and restaurants.
In Brazil, tilapia fillets are often grilled or pan-fried (filé de tilápia grelhado), breaded and deep-fried (tilápia empanada), served with rice, beans and salad, or served as a whole deep-fried fish in simple beach or riverside restaurants.
Originally native to the Nile, tilapia is possibly the oldest farmed fish in the world, with evidence of farming dating back as far as 2,500 years. Tilapia has a dense, firm texture. Its mild flavour suits almost any culinary tradition, from Asian to Italian to Mexican.
