Yerba La Merced Campo Sur is grown in the Argentinian province of Corrientes and is characterized by an intense but pleasant taste. The yerba leaves are stored and matured in the traditional way for over a year and each pack is numbered.

Yerba mate is used to prepare mate tea. When the drink is served cold, it is called tereré. Mate tea is traditionally consumed in South America, but is also popular in Syria and Lebanon.

Yerba mate translates as mate herb, although the word mate originally comes from the word mati, a complex word with several meanings from the Quechua language. Mati means, among other things, "container for a drink", "infusion of a herb" and "calabash". The infusion is drunk from a container (typically a calabash) that is filled up to three quarters full with dry leaves (and stems) of the mate plant. The leaves are infused with water at a temperature of 70-80 °C.
The calabash is also known as guampa, porongo or cuia, depending on the country. It is drunk through a special metal straw (bombilla in Spanish, bomba in Portuguese). The calabash is passed from one person to another (usually in a sitting circle) and refilled.
